An extensive search operation for Vijaya Lakshmi Gali, a 48-year-old Indian woman who fell into an 8-meter-deep sinkhole in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has hit a significant obstacle on its eighth day. Authorities have now declared the rescue efforts “too risky” for further deployment of divers due to the hazardous conditions encountered underground.
The incident, which occurred on Jalan Masjid India while Gali was visiting a local temple, has captured the attention of the nation, with around 110 rescuers working tirelessly. Despite their best efforts, including the use of scuba divers, sniffer dogs, camera crawlers, and high-pressure water jets, the search has so far yielded only a pair of slippers found during the initial 17-hour search.
The Fire and Rescue Department reported that two divers who entered through a sewer network faced strong water currents and obstructive debris. The conditions proved extremely challenging, with solidified debris resembling concrete blocks impeding progress. Rescue teams struggled with zero visibility and dangerous materials in the sewer system, which included human waste and garbage. Despite their perseverance, including attempts to break apart debris using ropes and high-pressure jets, the divers were ultimately forced to retreat.
As search efforts continue, officials have employed a ground-penetrating radar to detect changes in material density underground, but their efforts have been complicated by a second sinkhole that appeared nearby. This new development is believed to be a result of the ongoing search operations.
The area surrounding Jalan Masjid India, a popular tourist destination, has been notably quieter, with local traders experiencing a significant drop in sales. In response to the situation, the Malaysian government has extended the visas of Gali’s family for an additional month and cancelled National Day celebrations out of respect.
The incident has raised concerns and frustrations among Malaysians, with many questioning the cause of the sinkhole. Authorities have announced plans for an “integrity audit” to investigate the underlying factors, which may include human activities and climate change.
The community remains hopeful for a resolution, while the search and rescue teams continue to face unprecedented challenges in their efforts to locate Ms. Gali.
